What is Five-element Acupuncture?
Classical Five Element Acupuncture is an ancient form of acupuncture that seeks the emotional or spirit level cause for distress. Five-element acupuncture considers that there is one main cause behind the majority of a patient’s presenting symptoms. This is thought to be due to a constitutional weakness, developed through birth or early childhood that impedes the flow of energy. This weakened element is known as the patient’s constitutional element. The Five Elements are present in all of us – they give rise to our personality and make up the energy that flows inside our bodies.
Here’s an overview of the Five Elements and what they represent:
What constitutional Element do you relate to most?
Fire: Season: Summer | Emotion: Joy If you’re a Fire person; you love to laugh and connect with all kinds of people. However, Fire people may also have a deeper sadness within themselves.
Earth: Season: Late Summer | Emotion: Sympathy Earth people nourish and care for others; food and being heard and understood are important to them. Within his or her own life, an Earth person may experience a sense of emptiness or neediness.
Metal: Season: Autumn | Emotion: Grief Metal people set exceptionally high standards, both for themselves and those around them, and they value respect. A metal person may also carry a longing for what could have been.
Water: Season: Winter | Emotion: Fear Determined and tenacious, water people often do well in situations perceived as ‘scary’ by others. However, they may be hiding an inner sense of anxiety and fearfulness.
Wood: Season: Spring | Emotion: Anger Wood people are great at planning and decision-making; they possess the ability to achieve the goals they set. When unbalanced however, they can be indecisive and feel stuck or hopeless.
How does Five-element acupuncture differ to Traditional Chinese Medicine?
A Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner will tend to focus on physical symptoms and the treatment/elimination of these symptoms. A Five Element practitioner will be more focused on the emotional and spiritual elements of the imbalance, in order to treat the root cause of the disharmony.
How does acupuncture work & is it safe?
Acupuncture works by directly affecting the energy at special points along its pathway (called meridians). By gently inserting needles into these acupuncture points, energy’s are balanced and harmony is restored.
When performed by a qualified and fully accredited practitioner, acupuncture is a very safe form of therapy. Licensed acupuncturists are trained and certified in clean needling techniques, which must follow strict safety guidelines.
What to expect in your Five-element acupuncture session with Natasha
Part of the Five-element acupuncture session has a component of 1:1 counselling, this helps Natasha to identify habitual patterns and self-limiting beliefs that are active. Followed by a tailored five-element acupuncture session addressing the specific challenges and problem areas identified in your counselling session.
Based on the insights uncovered in counselling, Natasha will identify which acupuncture points are needed in order to target specific emotional blocks on the body. In order to treat patients successfully using Five-element acupuncture, Natasha must first determine which of the Five-elements is your Constitutional Factor (CF) or key element.
Natasha will take your Chinese pulses, which will allow her to determine the state of the energy of each of your major organs and functions. Using her training, she will also assess aspects such as your facial colour, vocal sound, emotion, odour and health issues; this will help her establish the underlying cause of your symptoms and give her an idea of your constitutional element.
Based on this assessment, Natasha will develop a unique treatment plan for you. This may involve the insertion of very fine acupuncture needle to release the energy of a particular point into the meridian. Alternatively, Natasha may use moxibustion, which is a specific herb that is burnt and used to gently warm the skin, in order to allow energy to flow deeper. This holistic approach allows Natasha to delve deeper into which part of the body’s delicate Five-element system has ceased to nurture the other elements and thus bringing balance & harmony back to the body, mind and spirit.
1:1 session | 1 hour | $95
1:1 session | 1.5 hours | $140
