What is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic Therapy considers and includes not only our thoughts and emotions but also how these are felt and held in the body. In this way it takes a body orientated approach to the therapeutic process and focuses on the integration of body and mind.
Every experience, emotion, shock, frustration, joy has a direct physiological as well as psychological impact in a person. When challenging emotions are repeatedly unexpressed and conflicts unresolved the consequences become chronic. Stress builds up, layer upon layer, until neurotic symptoms develop- in some cases mainly somatic, in others mainly behavioural.
Therapist and client explore together, reflecting on the client’s ‘story’, attitudes & behaviors with a primary focus being given to dissolving the patterns of body, energy and mind that no longer serve. Clients learn to recognise what can be done directly to increase freedom of movement, breath and sound, to renew ground, confidence, flexibility and aliveness and are given the support to move towards well-being as an immediate and ongoing option.
Somatic Therapy offers support on many levels.
It aims to encourage emotional maturity, a greater sense of autonomy and effectiveness. It is appropriate for anyone who would like to improve the quality of their way of living and working and being with others.
